Food for Budgies
Budgies food should contain seeds, fresh vegetables fruits and also greens. Make sure, the food you are providing to your budgies should be fresh and pesticides free. Seeds can be expired or lose their nutrition, if they are kept in a warm place, under direct sunlight or have been stored for a long time. Same problem arise with fruits, vegetables and greens. If they are not fresh or pesticides, the can be harmful for birds. So, it is important to opt budgies food from a reliable supplier. Do your best for having organic food .
Seeds :- Seeds list contains a well balanced mix of seeds including canary seed, millet, buckwheat, oats, barley and sunflower seeds. Keeping in mind, the dietary needs of budgies, It's better to go for pellet diet which is easily available in the market. Pellet diets are planned for captivated birds to provide them essential needs like minerals and vitamins. A good quality pellet should be free of artificial preservatives. A tablespoon of pellet diet, in a day, is enough for budgies along with rest of the food.
Fruits and vegetables :- To meet the requirement of carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins, fresh fruits and vegetables are good choice. Budgies should provide a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables on daily basis, but it is important to note that it should be almost 20-40% of the diet. Give them fresh, thoroughly washed and ripe fruits and vegetables. Offer them small pieces of different fruits and vegetables daily.
Birds love to eat apple, melon, banana, raspberry, strawberry, cherries, papaya, apricots, orange, mango, grapes, kiwi, peach, plum, pineapple, fig and pear etc.
Birds love to eat bell peppers, carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cabbage, spinach, corn, cucumber, tomatoes and pumpkin etc. Slightly boiled vegetables are also recommended.
Prohibited :- Some fruits and vegetables are not suitable for budgies like avocados, onions, garlic, lettuce and lemon etc. , because they contain chemical or less nutric values. Processed food, snacks like chips and chocolate, fizzy drinks, tea or coffee and alcohol are also not to be given to budgies. Seeds and stones of different fruits like apple seed or stone of apricot. Not only these items can upset stomach but can be poisonous.
Water :- Water is essential for budgies as other birds. Provide your budgies frequent supply of clean and fresh water with easy access. Refill their water pots to avoid contamination and bacterial growth. So, keep your budgies hydrate and healthy by providing fresh and clean water.
Additionally, they like to take a bath. Not only to clean their feathers but also gives them enjoyment. During winters, to take a bath twice a week is enough. During summers, twice a day or more is recommended. Provide budgies enough water to bath. Also remember, the water should be of room temperature or lukewarm according to weather conditions.
Cage :- Cage for budgies is always recommended in horizontal shape. Round shape cage is strictly not suitable for budgies. Specific designed cages for budgies are easily available in the market.
While purchasing or making cage for budgies, follow some basic instructions :
- Cage should be in large size enough to fly and jump.
- Choose a cage made of hard wire or stainless steel. Budgies try to chew or bend the wires, that can be harmful.
- Make sure to avoid any sharp edges that can be harmful to budgies.
- An approximate space of 1/2 inch must be between the bars of the cage.
- The door of the cage should be secured with a lock, as budgies can open the door with their beak intelligently.
- Place a set up of perches at high or low place to sit and easily jump upward and downward.
- Place the cage at a place where they are safe from direct sunlight, heat, cold or any enemy like cats etc. But it is also necessary to have a reach of fresh air and light.
- Food and water containers should place at an easy access place. Keep them neat and clean.
- Budgies like to play with toys. Provide them toys like swings, bells, ladders, rope bridge, flying trampoline and noise making toys.
It is also very important to protect your birds from extreme weather. cover them during winters. During summers, protect them from heat, place their cage in a cool and airy place.
Take care of their physical and mental health. Visit your veterinarian every six month. Get their nails and feathers trim if necessary.
